That means a commitment to live as learners — investing time so you can deeply understand the words, ways and needs of the local people.
Why long term? We have seen that mission – that bringing the Kingdom of God into the lives of those we serve – is most effective when we commit to the long haul.
Long term mission allows us to build sustainable and genuine relationships. It enables us to gain a deep understanding of our local friends' culture and worldviews, which in turn helps us present the good news of Jesus in a way that makes sense to them.

As an intercultural team member, you’ll dedicate yourself to learning the local language and culture so you can communicate in a way that makes sense in that place.
As you build trust and authentic relationships within the community, opportunities to share God’s love through word and deed will open.
These things take time. You’ll spend your first few years building a strong foundation of language and cultural culture. Early relationships are built with neighbours, colleagues and your local language teacher.
This is often followed by a period in Australia – or your home country – to connect with your support team and take a break. Then, you’ll return to your ministry location ready for your second term and beyond.

How do I apply?
There are three stages in the Baptist Mission Australia pathway to becoming an intercultural team member.
What is your calling? Is Baptist Mission Australia the right fit for you? We are here to help you prayerfully discern your next steps.
Once you have discerned your calling with the support of Baptist Mission Australia, the next step is to begin the application process.
