Representing Jesus

9 April 2025

Paul shares about his work with the Power to Change team at Macquarie University, in the northern suburbs of Sydney.

Recently I spent time reflecting on this year’s May Mission Month theme of More Like Jesus. As I reflected, I was reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. Paul says that through Christ’s death and resurrection, God was reconciling the world to Himself.

He then goes on to say:

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:20

I love this image. As Christ’s ambassadors, we are to represent Jesus to the world, to bring His message and to reflect His goodness, love and grace to those around us. We are to live as Jesus did, coming alongside people where they are and investing in their lives. We are to give others the opportunity to be reconciled to God through Christ.

As I work with the Power to Change team at Macquarie University, I’m struck by just how important it is for us to represent Jesus in that place. There are 10,000 international students at the uni. There are many local students from diverse cultural backgrounds, and so many of these students haven’t ever really known a close Christian friend. So many have never heard the Good News of Jesus in ways that make sense to them.

I currently have the privilege of meeting with a number of students who are exploring Christian faith. One of these students is a Chinese student called ‘Jack’. A colleague, and I meet with Jack once a week. We’ve been working our way through different stories from the scriptures that reveal the Good News of Jesus and show Jack who Jesus is.

What’s super encouraging is that before every time we meet, Jack will spend time reading through the passage we are about to study and he comes to us prepared with thoughtful and challenging questions. Jack has a belief in a creator God and a genuine respect for Jesus.

Please pray that as we connect with Jack, the Holy Spirit would be at work and that Jack would put his faith in Christ. Pray that he would be one of many students who do this as we journey with them.

Please also pray for the Christian students who are involved in our community. Pray that we can encourage them to be more like Jesus as they grow in their faith and seek to lead their fellow students. Ask that we would all become more like Jesus as we seek to be His loving and gracious representatives at Macquarie University.

I want to say a massive thank you for your support and your partnership. I am so grateful that you choose to journey with me and pray for me, giving towards my work at Macquarie.

I pray that you would know God’s blessing and enabling as you seek to be more like Jesus in your own context.
