For nearly a decade, this project has impacted thousands of people living in poverty. It has also influenced communities to encourage government and corporate responses to the environmental crisis that inequitably affects the poor. It includes the facilitation of community education campaigns and reduces poverty through environmental management and empowerment programs for socio-economically disadvantaged communities.
Initiatives include a waste bank and recycling income generation program, provision of food and resources in times of natural disaster or economic distress, literacy support for children, financial literacy for families and training in food production, community clean-up events and targeted environmental and social rehabilitation projects.
Our South East Asia team is excited to see continued opportunities with life-changing results. The project operates in two locations with a vision to see transformed quality of life through enhanced local environments.
The waste bank processes 30 tonnes of waste each month, avoiding it returning to the streets. It is collected by about 150 families who are cleaning up their community and earning a fair income. They enjoy interacting in a safe space, receiving life lessons in financial literacy to help break debt traps, healthcare and children’s education – services they would not otherwise be able to afford.
The multi-faceted, holistic outcomes of this project are life-changing. Individuals, families, neighbourhoods and communities are being transformed through this locally-led, grassroots initiative.
Please note: If a project is fully funded when your gift arrives, we will allocate your gift to a project, team member or ministry that is in the same location or fulfils a similar purpose.
