Myanmar Partnership

They are some of the most vulnerable people on the planet. Needs in the country and on the Thai, Indian and Chinese borders are enormous and growing. Since the military junta staged a coup and took over government in Myanmar in 2021, the situation has continued to escalate with no end to violence, increase in aerial bombings, human rights abuses and with the introduction of conscription.

Throughout the month of October, in celebration and recognition of World Teachers’ Day on 5 October, all donations received through this project will support teachers in Myanmar and in the Thai refugee camps, courageously standing in the gap, sacrificially serving to ensure vulnerable children and youth can still receive an education.

1. Refugee Camps, Thailand
A practical gift of love
The first World Teachers’ Day initiative will see 1,500 teachers in refugee camps on the Thai-Myanmar border each provided with a 20kg bag of rice. These teachers have lost their food rations and their wages have been dramatically reduced due to US Aid cuts. This practical, loving gift has been suggested by the local partner supporting teachers in the camps. It’s one way we can thank the teachers for their sacrificial commitment and provide some basic food assistance at a time of need.

2. Karen State
Keeping schools open
The second initiative will support five remote village schools in Karen State, Myanmar, for the next six months. These schools were established by the Kawthoolei Karen Baptist Convention due to the almost complete lack of Government schools in the area. If these schools didn’t exist, children in these villages would inevitably end up without any education and they would likely be labouring on their parents’ farms. Often, girls are still married by the age of 14 in this area, and education makes such a big difference, allowing students to learn about basic human rights. Teachers in these schools risk their lives to ensure students are educated and hear about the love and hope of Jesus.

Despite disappearing from our daily news reports, the situation in Myanmar has worsened over the past year according to the UN. There are now more than 3.5million people displaced in the country and border regions. Many people in country are forced to live or hide in the jungle, while refugee camps in border regions are overflowing and many need to create makeshift housing. Funds are desperately needed for education, medical supplies, food, water and clothing.

Amid all this tragedy and hopelessness, the light and justice of Jesus shines through resilient, courageous and faithful people in the country and border areas. Baptist Mission Australia is working with Sharing Hope, Kawthoolei Karen Baptist Convention, Chin Christian Council Australia, Kachin Baptist Convention and other partners to express the hope of Jesus in action.
