Hope in hardship

18 February 2026

Over the past few months, we have swung from celebration to hardship and back again.

Malawi is facing an unprecedented economic crisis. Prices have surged nearly 600% in the recent year. Fuel now costs almost AUD $5 a litre, and the cost of living is the highest it has ever been. Tim and I can adapt, but those we serve are carrying the heaviest burden. You might expect despair. Instead, we’re witnessing something remarkable: an unshakable culture of hope. It’s an honour to stand together in the storm, fixing our eyes on heaven rather than the troubles of earth. In the midst of hardship, there is a deep and genuine richness.

We celebrate the continued success of the local entity run by the faith communities, Cipula Camwenye, which has somehow continued to thrive amidst Malawi’s crashing economy. How this is happening, we do not fully know, but we give all glory to God! The income of these businesses support the ministry of the believers in the villages.

Our village ministries remain strong. Children’s groups are meeting regularly in 17 villages, gathering to learn God’s Word together. Alongside this, our seven ministry partners continue faithfully teaching and discipling adults within their communities.

Our most recent Yawo Youth Camp was a particular highlight. During the camp, 36 young people made a clear allegiance shift to Jesus. It was a deep joy to welcome them into the Kingdom of God.

This camp, however, came during a very challenging season for us. We had only just returned from three days in hospital with our compound manager and Chairman of the CC board, following a freak accident that resulted in the loss of his right eye. For those who have journeyed with us through his recovery, we recently celebrated a small but significant victory.

Through every high and low, we continue to see God’s faithfulness and provision, and we remain deeply grateful for all who walk this journey with us. Thank you for your continued support and interest in the work in Malawi.

Melanie has been passionately serving among the Yawo of Malawi with Tim and their sons, since 2008. They share God’s Word, equip local faith leaders, facilitate and adult education program and journey alongside Yawo friends and neighbours.
