Exposure and Immersion Trips
So you’re organising a short term mission trip for your church. You can consider a Global Exposure or First Nations Immersion Experience.
Global Exposure
We partner with Australian Baptist churches to send teams of people to visit our intercultural teams in Asia, Africa, or Outback Australia.
On a Global Exposure trip, you’ll be immersed in an unfamiliar culture. And you’ll quickly learn that this trip is not so much about ‘doing’, as it is about ‘observing’ and ‘experiencing’.
Global Exposure trips are usually from 14-21 days and with groups of 5-10 people.

Katianna writes, “Through the car window I could see a multitude of vehicles; rickshaws, colourful buses with cracks in the windows, motorbikes and cars tailgating each other, weaving from the left side of the road to the right. The sound was a symphony of beeps and engines. As I sat in a van with a group of six young adults, we watched blue, green, pink and white buildings fly past us and intermittently glanced at each other excitedly.
We were in South Asia and our Global Exposure trip had begun!“
FAQs
We work primarily with local churches in dreaming, organising, recruiting and preparing the teams. We look for leaders with intercultural experience, skills in leadership and, most of all, sensitivity to the local culture and long-term work. Often team leaders are church pastors. Most teams have one or two leaders and between five to ten participants.
The focus of our Global Exposure teams is on awareness and an action-reflection learning model. Team members are encouraged to look, listen, ask questions and learn from the Baptist Mission Australia team members and others they meet. Teams will stay at the homes of Baptist Mission Australia team members or local guest houses and engage in cultural activities e.g. market visits, prayer walks, significant places in the community. Some teams may be involved in specific projects like English teaching or cultural exchange. All teams will set aside at least three days at the end of the trip for debriefing.
Depending on location, the average cost is $2,500 per person. Teams raise their own finances to cover their expenses. Baptist Mission Australia provides travel insurance, training manuals and support with training and debriefing at no cost. However, every participant contributes $150 towards the Global Exposure Development Program. This Program subsidises costs for pastor’s trips, which provides opportunities for development for them to lead future teams.
Global Exposure includes multiple training session that cover topics like team dynamics, culture shock, missiology and contextualisation. It is the teams that thoroughly prepare who have the most fulfilling experience which impacts participants long after they have returned home.
First Nations Immersion Experience
We are partnering with Global Mission Partners to offer First Nations Immersion Experiences.
These are cultural learning tours, gatherings, or retreats that allow small groups to learn about Indigenous perspectives and culture in their local area.
First Nations Immersion Experiences are usually 3 days in groups of up to 15 people.
Reconciliation in our nations story requires moving towards our Indigenous neighbours. A step in that journey is receiving the hand of friendship and hospitality offered to us. First Nations Immersion Experience create the opportunity to come alongside our Indigenous partners and communities. Explore relationships between Indigenous and non-indigenous people and communities to work towards a reconciled and healed Australia based on God’s justice and mercy.
