English Teaching and Friendship

For many years our team in the Silk Road have run a Language Centre that provides passionate and professional English teaching to students and young adults. It has recently expanded into teaching K language adult literacy classes to address education needs in the community and help tackle illiteracy. Globalisation has meant that when K people have English proficiency, they have better employment opportunities, which can impact whole communities.

Our team and three local teachers offer subsidised beginner, conversational and advanced academic English classes, K language literacy classes and homework clubs. With more than 140 students attending across the week, and even more on the waiting list, the centre is thriving and rapidly growing. They recently added a new classroom to meet the growing need!

Our team members build relationships with the staff and facilitate weekly meetings, often focusing on our motivation to see lives transformed. Many past students remember their Australian teachers with fondness, and some have progressed to become English teachers in their own local village schools.

Support for this project contributes to local teacher’s salaries, student subsidies, textbooks and resources, as well as utilities and maintenance.

This is an ongoing project and any additional funds will be used towards the 2027 budget.

The Language Centre has a practical and relational impact on the local community. It supports children and youth who work hard to learn English, offers access for those that couldn’t otherwise afford it and includes adults who have never had the opportunity before now!
