Flora’s Story
‘Flora’ is a local faith leader, serving with our long-term ministry partner in South Asia. You only need to spend a short time with Flora and you see how much she models the way of Jesus. She is wholeheartedly committed to playing her part in bringing holistic transformation to local communities in one of the poorest and most challenged nations on the planet.
Flora comes alongside women living in impoverished rural communities. She sees these marginalised women. She invites the women to participate in self-help groups that open the door to transformation in their personal lives, families and communities.
The groups initially focus on basic education – things like literacy, numeracy, women’s health, hygiene and their rights. Flowing from this foundation, the women form small savings and loan co-operatives. Through regular savings, the groups provide members loans for things like cows and chickens, motor bikes, children’s school fees, market gardens and even building a new house.
These small groups foster confidence, independence, wellbeing, choice and dignity. Most of all they bring hope.
They are birthing new possibilities in communities, all too often forgotten. They are enabling women to experience the love and hope of Jesus in ways that make sense to them in their context.
