This issue is close to the heart of Australian Baptists. There are many people groups from Myanmar represented in our Baptist movement across Australia, and for them, this crisis and the continued persecution against their people hits very close to home. As Australian Baptists, we believe that jointly supporting our fellow Baptists from Myanmar in prayer and action is timely and we can do so through advocacy to the Australian Government and giving towards programmatic work in Myanmar and on its borders.
The current situation in Myanmar
Since the military junta staged a coup and took over government in Myanmar in 2021, the situation has continued to escalate with no end to violence, increase in aerial bombings and with the introduction of conscription, causing significant widespread displacement.
Despite disappearing from our daily news reports, the situation in Myanmar has worsened in recent months and according to the UN, there are approximately 2,650,000 internally displaced people living or hiding in the jungle in Myanmar and a further 1,133,000 seeking asylum or in refugee camps in the countries surrounding Myanmar. Funds are desperately needed for education, medical supplies, food, water and clothing.
How you and your church get involved
You can get involved by holding a Myanmar Sunday service between August 18 and September 15. During this special service, you can include time to pray for Myanmar, advocate for better outcomes and protections for vulnerable people and give towards humanitarian or faith-based support.
On the
Stand with Myanmar website, you will find prayer, advocacy and giving resources. It's your choice what resources you use and how much time you allocate to Stand with Myanmar during your service.
Please know that your generous financial support will make a tangible difference for vulnerable people in Myanmar and border areas. Tax deductible gifts will go towards vital support including: humanitarian relief, support for children and schools, and income generating skills training. And non-tax deductible gifts will go towards faith-based support including: trauma training for pastors, leadership training and church planting.
