Recent Updates

1/12/24 - In November, Fiona and a small team were able to travel to Vietnam. Their original plans to do follow up surveys and commence new surveys in Northern Vietnam were not possible because of the floods and roads cut off, but the group travelled to a new region. They also spent time with Mark and Ngoc in their city and with our Vietnamese partner.

During their trip, Fiona and her team were able to help in a clinic, provide training for women in a local shelter and those that support them, speak with women in a village about birthing stories and learn about maternal and child health needs in that community. They were also involved in running training in the city, teaching English, building connections with local doctors and so much more in this three week trip. Thank you for your generous support of this project and making this trip possible. Fiona hopes to visit again in early 2025. There is no need for further project funds at this time.

Project Code: ICEwh301

In rural communities in Northern Vietnam, women often give birth at home or in clinics with limited resources, using traditional practices and knowledge. While childbirth is usually safe, even when there are birthing complications, the outcomes in these regions are harsher than in urbanised areas with greater medical access.

Maternal and infant mortality rates are higher in this country than the broader geographical region and the country’s government is prioritising midwife training programs for ethnic minorities in recognition of their greater need.

The project enables an exploratory visit by a childbirth expert and team members to examine the possibilities for a future project providing maternity and childbirth support. This trip is planned for November 2024.

The budget covers all travel costs including flights, visas, accommodation and food.

Your partnership with this project enables childbirth experts to visit a rural area in Vietnam, meet with community members and explore the possibility of providing regular maternity and childbirth support in a priority area.
