Scott reflects on the faithful and passionate service of the late Chris Pittendrigh.
At the heart of the Baptist Mission Australia story are our people, women and men who over 140 years have made themselves available to serve Jesus through our mission community. People who have served in local communities across the globe, people who served on our national team across Australia and our highly valued partners across our movement.
Some of our people leave an indelible mark on the lives of others and we are thankful for the unique contribution. Rev Chris Pittendrigh was one of these faithful and passionate servants.
Chris served Baptist Mission Australia with distinction as our Overseas Secretary from 1983-2004. This was a significant season of service, which saw an expansion in the places we served across the world, some significant new partnerships established, and new approaches to ministry embraced.
Chris passed away on 1 October and a service of thanksgiving was held on Monday (October 14) at New Hope Baptist Church in Melbourne.
Chris was much loved across our mission community and by many of our ministry partners across the globe. He brought his strong pastoral gifts to his important role, along with a commitment to innovation and collaboration.
In recent weeks, many people have shared with me a
'Chris story' – and beyond the impact he had organisationally, or with our partners, I have been struck by the deep, personal connections that people have highlighted. He certainly had a Christ-like impact in the lives of so many people across the world.
I know you will join me in giving thanks to God for Chris’ life, service and legacy and be praying for his wife Heather and children Sally and Michael and their families at this time. We have passed several condolence emails on to the family, so if you would like to send a note to the family via our office, please drop our national team an email.
As we celebrate Chris’ life and faithful service, we are encouraged and challenged by the opportunity each of us have, to share in God’s mission across the street and around the world. We are privileged to collaborate in what God’s Spirit is doing through our mission community and our ministry partners across the world. Thank you for your unique contribution.
Thank you for sharing in our vision of seeing more people experiencing and expressing the transforming love and hope of Jesus.
Grace and peace.
Scott
